Tora-kuma-dōji.
虎熊童子(Torakuma-doji)
— Tiger-bear demon child
Tora-kuma-dōji is one of Shuten-dōji's Four Divine Kings, a hybrid tiger-bear oni retainer whose name condenses speed, ferocity, and mountain strength into a single lieutenant figure.
§Appearance
Tora-kuma-dōji (虎熊童子) bears the most aggressive composite name among Shuten-dōji's lieutenants, joining tiger violence to bear mass. Even without a long independent legend, the name works like compressed characterization. He is imagined as a fast, savage, heavily built oni captain suited to the inner defenses of the demon fortress.
§Interactions
As one of the Four Divine Kings of Shuten-dōji, Tora-kuma-dōji helps define the demon lord's power as organized and ranked. He is not merely one more monstrous body in a cave. He is a named officer in a retinue that the invading heroes must reckon with. His presence thickens the atmosphere of impending combat around the demon court.
§Origin
He is preserved in the medieval versions of the Shuten-dōji story that elaborate the oni household, especially the Otogi-zōshi tradition. The retention of his name, despite the lack of a full separate tale, shows how important naming was to the shaping of demon courts in medieval narrative. Tora-kuma-dōji survives because the tale wanted recognizable captains at the demon king's side.
