Kane-dōji.
金童子(Kane-doji)
— Metal demon child
Kane-dōji is one of Shuten-dōji's Four Divine Kings, a metal-marked oni lieutenant whose name fits the iron fortifications and hard martial order of the Ōeyama demon court.
§Appearance
Kane-dōji (金童子) is named in a way that evokes metal, hardness, and weapon-bearing discipline. In the atmosphere of the Shuten-dōji tales, where the demon lair itself can be imagined as an Iron Palace, that name suits a lieutenant associated with durable force and armored resistance. He is less an independently characterized ogre than a metallized extension of the fortress order.
§Interactions
Kane-dōji belongs to the inner military frame of the Ōeyama legend. He is one of the named officers who make the oni realm feel built, defended, and ruled. Rather than wandering freely like a local yōkai, he serves in a demon hierarchy that must be penetrated by disguised heroes. His interaction with the human side is therefore defined by resistance, guarding, and the defense of Shuten-dōji's domain.
§Origin
The figure appears in the Otogi-zōshi elaborations of the Shuten-dōji story, where the demon lord's retinue receives names and ranks. Kane-dōji is one of those names that carry thematic weight even without a long attached biography. He is part of the narrative machinery that turns the oni court into a martial state with captains beneath its king.
